Part of the Rotary youth exchange program is to experience new things, as our student Mercedes from Spain did when she attended her first Bat-Mitzvah where she ran into our club secretary, Judge Jonah Triebwasser, and his wife Ellen. A good time was had by all.

Our guest speaker this week was our very own Rob Latimer who recently vacationed with his family in the small village of Hopkins in Belize.  Rob wanted to attend a local Rotary club meeting only to learn they take the Summer off.  He did however make a connection with Wendy Miller a local resident & Real Estate broker who is looking to start a club in Hopkins.  Wendy’s Father was a Rotarian and this is what inspired her to start a local club.
Rob spent a couple of hours sharing with her all the great work Rotary International does as well as the great work our own local rotary chapter performs here in Red Hook.  He learned the village has no potable water, and the local park was a rotary sponsored project with a club from Canada.  We are discussing  ideas on how we might be able to act as a “mentoring” club with the Hopkins club and perhaps even with help with sponsoring an Aquabox (approx. $300.) to provide a water filtration system to the village. To learn more about Rotary International and how we’re an ambassador for Aquabox visit http://www.aquabox.org/

As Rotary is dedicated to permanently ending polio, another unique Rotary connection was made when Rob visited a local market in San Ignacio where he fell in love with a painting. He learned the artist, Oscar Ulin, suffers with polio and can't use his hands so he paints with his mouth. See Oscar’s story at: https://www.facebook.com/LowerDover/videos/1416850208347352/

In photo: Rob Latimer and President Tim Lynch (photo by Rev. Fred Cartier)

Rob further reports: " The park built in Hopkins through a combined effort between the Rotary Club of Dangriga and a club from Canada has fallen into disrepair. Also, without any lighting, parents won't allow kids to play there after sunset.
The newly formed satellite club of Hopkins is going to raise the money needed to repair the park and add lighting, bringing the park up to safety standards and creating a village-center focal point for children to play and socialize.
Artist Oscar Ulin has limited use of his hands due to polio, and paints at the San Ignacio market using his mouth to hold the brush. I will have one of his works back from the framer shortly.

Four generations of Latimers (twelve of us from 71 down to 1 year old) made the trip to Hopkins. Meeting the founders of the newly-forming Hopkins Rotary Club was a highlight of the trip. I look forward to exploring the possibilities for partnering with this new satellite club, as soon as they have their approval from RI."

Welcome Rotary District 7210 District Governor Jim Damiani

District Governor Jim made his official visit to our club today. He was introduced by Region 3 Assistant Governor Rose Shaffer.

District Governor Jim commented on the beauty of our new meeting location, which is a former church with beautiful stained glass windows. He thanked us for being
Rotarians. Rotary helps the vulnerable, voiceless people of the world.

When DG Jim first joined Rotary we were embarking on a project called Polio Plus. At that time there were 7,000 new cases of polio each week. There have been 35 new cases so far this year or about 1 per week. Bill Gates addressed Rotarians at the recent International Convention in Atlanta, GA. He said about $1.5 billion is needed to complete eradication of polio in the world. He pledged $400 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. DG Jim said that by the end of the convention $1.2 billion had been received in pledges. That leaves $300 million for Rotary to raise. Rotary International President Ian Riseley has asked every Rotary Club to hold a special event to raise money for Polio Plus and to raise
public awareness of Polio.

DG Jim told us that RI President Ian Riseley is very concerned about the environment. He is concerned about climate change around the world. RI President Ian has asked every Rotarian to
plant a tree.

Our speaker was Ellen Haggerty of the Pleasant Valley, NY Rotary Club.  Ellen is the chairperson of Rotarians for Hearing, Rotary Action Group.  Rotarians for Hearing encourage Rotarians and others in Rotary who are passionate about helping children and adults with hearing loss in their communities and around the world reach their potential.  Ellen mentioned that there are many devices available to assist the hearing impaired beyond ear hearing aids.  She demonstrated a wireless speaker system that produced very clear sound.  Using an app on your smart phone along with a pair of earbuds Ellen showed members how they could connect with her wireless system.  Ellen was instrumental in getting closed captioning on the large screen during Rotary International Convention sessions.  She also makes sure that the personal listening devices that are used at the convention sessions for translation in to other languages includes English for hearing impaired attendees.  Rotarians for Hearing have submitted a proposal for a Rotary Global Grant to fund an infant hearing loss testing and treatment program in Guatemala.  More information about Rotarians for Hearing can be found on their website www.ifrahl.org. (photo by Rev. Our guest speakers were two of the three Red Hook High School sophomores (soon to be juniors) who attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference at the end of June.  Syr, Katelin and Colin attended the conference.  Colin was on vacation this week and unfortunately could not be with us this morning. Syr and Katelin both said it was a great experience attending RYLA.  Both girls mentioned that they did not get placed in the activity group of their choice which made them feel uneasy and out of their comfort zone.  Katelin wanted to be in the engineering group, but was placed in the skit/comedy group.  Syr wanted to be in the graduation planning group, but was placed in the chorus.  They learned the importance of working together on a team or in a group.  They learned members of the team or group have different personalities and play different roles, but every member is important to the team as a whole.  Both felt it was a growth experience for them. New RI Theme Announced!

Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do,” RI President-elect John F. Germ said, and that being a part of Rotary is a “great opportunity” to make that happen.

Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidential theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, to incoming district governors on 18 January at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

“I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better, forever through Rotary’s service to humanity,” said Germ.

Rotary members around the globe are serving humanity by providing clean water to underdeveloped communities, promoting peace in conflict areas, and strengthening communities through basic education and literacy. But none more important than our work to eradicate polio worldwide, he said.

After a historic year in which transmission of the wild poliovirus was stopped in Nigeria and all of Africa, Germ said we are closer than ever to ending polio.

“We are at a crossroads in Rotary,” he added. “We are looking ahead at a year that may one day be known as the greatest year in Rotary’s history: the year that sees the world’s last case of polio.”

Last year’s milestones leave just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the virus still circulates. Polio would be only the second human disease ever to be eradicated.

When that moment arrives, it’s “tremendously important” that Rotary is ready for it, said Germ. “We need to be sure that we are recognized for that success, and leverage that success into more partnerships, greater growth, and even more ambitious service in the decades to come.”

Germ, a member of the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, encouraged attendees to return to their clubs and communities and spread the word about Rotary’s role in the fight for a polio-free world.

“People who want to do good will see that Rotary is a place where they can change the world. Every Rotary club needs to be ready to give them that opportunity,” Germ said.

Enhancing Rotary’s image isn’t the only way to boost membership. “We need clubs that are flexible, so our service will be more attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people.”

He added: “We need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward.”

Previously it was mentioned that there is a change to Rotary's Every Rotarian Every Year.  It was thought that every Rotarian would have to become a sustaining member (donate at least $100 per year) for our club to meet this goal.  Bud contacted a representative at the RI Foundation and they were not aware of this new requirement.  Bud is looking into this further and will let us know.

Bud reported that according to Rotary International records donations from our club members is quite low to date.  Bud encouraged our members to begin making your donations to the Foundation now rather than waiting until June 2016.  If you donate $10 to $20 per month you will easily become a sustaining member of the Foundation by the end of this Rotary year.  Some club members are very close to obtaining their first Paul Harris Fellowship and others are close to moving to the next level.  Contact Bud to find out your level on contributions.

Every member is supposed to go to rotary.org/myrotary;to view their profile and learn about Rotary.  You can also make a donation to the Rotary Foundation from your MyRotary account.  It is easy to set up your account.  You need your Rotary member number that can be found on the mailing label of The Rotarian magazine.

Red Hook Rotary to honor Sue T. Crane as Citizen of the Year

The Red Hook Rotary Foundation along with the Rotary Club of Red Hook will honor retiring Red Hook Town Supervisor Sue T. Crane as Red Hook’s Citizen of the Year for 2015.  Sue will be recognized at a dinner on Tuesday evening, October 20, 2015 at the Red Hook Firehouse.  The event will begin with a social time at 6:00 p.m.  The cost of the dinner is $45.00 per person.  Tickets are available from any Red Hook Rotarian, at the Town Hall, Village Hall, by calling 845-758-5386, or email cdowden@hvc.rr.com.

For nearly three decades, Sue has been a strong influence in Red Hook and the Northern Dutchess area with her leadership skills and abilities.  In the early years of this time period, she led the American Heart Association of Dutchess County, and the Board of Directors of Northern Dutchess Hospital and some of its affiliates.  Over the last 16 years Sue has served our community first as a Town of Red Hook Board member and for the past eight years as Town Supervisor.  In her leadership roles for the Town, Sue spearheaded the Affordable Senior Housing Project “Red Hook Commons”, a 96 unit complex; worked to preserve approximately 5,000 acres of farm and open space; helped preserve Historic St. Margaret’s Home; and developed new and expanded Town Highway facilities to name a few.

Rotary Club of Red Hook is part of Rotary International.  Rotary is an international service organization comprised of business and professional leaders working together in a variety of humanitarian, educational and cultural programs to promote World Peace and Understanding.  There are over 1.2 million Rotarians in 35,000 clubs around the world.

Almost 10 years ago, Red Hook Rotarians established The Red Hook Rotary Foundation, a 501 c 3 charitable foundation, to provide financial support of programs and projects in and around the Red Hook community.  The main focus of the Foundation is in the areas of education and youth.  The Foundation awards scholarships to high school seniors and supports the Interact Club at Red Hook High School and Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program.

Rotary Club of Red Hook meets every Tuesday morning at Bread and Bottle on the corner of South Broadway and East Market Street in beautiful downtown Red Hook, New York.  The club meeting begins at 7:30 a.m. and visitiors are welcome.

Rotary Seeks Nominations for Citizen of the Year

The Red Hook Rotary Foundation is seeking nominations from the community for our 2015  Citizen of the Year.  Each year for the past 14 years, Rotary has honored a member of the Red Hook community as “Citizen of the Year”.

Rotary is looking for an individual or group who has given to our community, unselfishly to make Red Hook a better place to live.  The nominee should exemplify Rotary’s motto of “Service above Self”.  Nomination forms can be obtained at the Red Hook Village or Town Halls; download from the Rotary website www.redhookrotaryclub.org or by emailing your request to cdowden@hvc.rr.com.  This is a nomination process, not balloting.  Our decision of who we will honor is based on what the nominee has done for our community, not how many nominations we receive for the same nominee.

Completed nomination forms have to be returned or postmarked by September 4, 2015.  They can be returned by mail to: COTY Nomination, Red Hook Rotary Foundation, PO Box 88, Red Hook, NY 12571-0088; emailed to cdowden@hvc.rr.com; or in person to the Village or Town Halls.

The Red Hook Rotary Club meets every Tuesday morning at Bread and Bottle, South Broadway and East Market St., Red Hook.  Our meeting begins at 7:30 am.  Local business and professional people are invited to join us to learn more about Rotary International.

Red Hook Rotary recently welcomed guest speaker Suzanne Kelly who spoke about green burials.  Green burial, or natural burial, ensures the burial site remains as natural as possible in all respects.  Interment of the bodies is done in a bio-degradable casket, shroud, or a favorite blanket.   No embalming fluid and no concrete vaults are used.
